CoBRA Charmer
We spent a day filming with musician, playwright, author and more recently, founder of the Community Battery Recycling Alliance (CoBRA) Mark David Hatwood. We joined Mark at The Harbour Club in Portscatho to make a promotional video about CoBRA, a scheme he initiated after he was refused permission by his County Council to collect batteries on behalf of his community. Six weeks’ worth of negotiation later, Mark was eventually given dispensation by the Environment Agency and the County to run a trial scheme in his village – the first of its kind anywhere in the UK.
Over the next two years, more than 35 tonnes of batteries had been collected via the creation of 58 collection points throughout Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. The CoBRA Scheme went on to win four national awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and is now available to all counties throughout the UK.
